At first they were terrified since they did not know what a pellet was made of. Some thought pellets were "owl poop" and others thought it was "owl throw-up" and all cringed at the thought of "dissecting" these. The educational materials, while too in-depth for our age kids, were very informative and helped jump start a lot of great discussions. The skull diagrams helped students identify their bone specimens as well.
Many of our students found multiple skull and jaw fragments, which was way more exciting than they thought it would be.
The smaller bones were harder for them to identify, thus not "as fun," but they spent a lot of time pouring over the one skeleton diagram to see if any of bones matched and what the proper names would be. It was a great project to use in our class to wrap up our unit on Vertebrates and bones in general.
