Avalon is 55kms from Melbourne centre. Tullamarine is 28kms calculated guess. Agreed with the above - Avalon feels like you're flying into Uncle Ben's farm - if your flight is delayed, the only thing exciting to do is buy a Coke.
Give it a miss if the price isn't too huge a difference. Saw you're going to Brisbane for a few days too? I recommend heading up to Noosa on the Sunshine Coast - just went up there alone with books, hiking and beach. Great spot. But if you're looking to party-party, maybe the Gold Coast is your style. It isn't one of my most favourite places I would suggest that if you have only 4 days in Brisbane I would see if you can get a day trip to Fraser Island, this is a beautiful part of Aus.
